Rwanda | Kamonyi: Cassava prices increase amid placement of Kinazi plant
Farmers of cassava are so happy after kinazi cassava plant farm in the district of Ruhango joined the rest of the market in selling cassava. This is because at first they were selling cassava at a less price but since then the prices of it have double hence a very good improvement in the incomes of the farmers of cassava.
In the different markets of kamonyi were about 12 kgs -15 kg of cassava could buy 2000Rwf, now they can buy 4000Rwf.
The farmers say this rise in the prices could have been caused by the less cassava that gets to them since the other is sold by the cooperatives of cassava.
“The price is not that bad since at the kinazi factory they do sell a kilogram of cassava flour at 500Rwf from their factory “said Teresa Kayitesi, one of the farmers in kamonyi.
The farmers still do thank kinazi saying that even if the do not sell with kinazi they can still take their cassava to other markets and still gain a lot of money from it.
“Before this cassava could grow in plenty forcing farmers to take it to Kigali where they could sell a kilo at 80Rwf-100Rwf,” said Bizimana Charles a cassava farmer in Kamonyi, adding on that since the factory started working cassava is no longer much since many people do sell it to the factory and even the ones who do not do take it to markets and do sell them highly hence making a farmers value high.
Most farmers do sell cassava to the factory at 50Rwf but still see this as a good price since there is not too much involved in selling it to them.
This price is giving farmers more hope since even the money they were getting from their product before still helped them in solving their problems.
Cassava plant is one crop that is grown in kamonyi especially in kamayaga, kazigwe and the sectors of Mugina, Nyamiyaga, Rugarika and Nyarubaka.
