Rwanda | Nyagatare: RAB to prepare farmers for the next season
The first cultivation season has already started and farmers should rush and get fertilizers to boost their farming as with fertilizers, a farmer can produce about 5 tons on an area of 1 hectare instead of one ton without fertilizers. This was said by the Rwandan Agriculture Board (RAB).
Celestin Myambi the director of RAB in the Eastern province of Rwanda asked the agronomists in local administration in Nyagatare district on the 13th.Aug.2012 to sensitize people to buy their own fertilizers when usually they were provided with it as a debt to be paid during the harvest so as not to repeat the mistakes done over the years.
Those mistakes are where some farmers were given fertilizers that do not meet with the cultivated area and even some people selling it instead of using it which made payments difficult. However, a person will pay 50% of the fertilizers and the government will pay the remaining 50% in “Nkunganire” program.
Some cooperatives though which are capable will provide fertilizers to its members and those who do are not capable can show collateral capital to get fertilizers for their members to be paid in harvest. This was decided by RAB directorate in the Eastern province with the district administration, agronomists in sectors to support farmers who cannot provide fertilizers for themselves.
This meeting also decided that fertilizers should not be given to individual farmers who farm below one hectare but those who farm between one and three hectares and those in groups, teams and associations and will be affected by “Nkunganire” program.
He asked the agronomists in sectors to make a close follow up on the farmers from planting, how they use the selected seeds, land use consolidation, how they use fertilizers until harvesting.
