Rwanda : Agricultural experts say Burning grass in gardens affects crops
Although Ministry of agriculture prohibits farmers from burning grass but keep it for mulching and manure making, some still burn grass in their gardens.
Alexis Benimana, in charge of agriculture in Ngororero district asserts that burning grass destroys the quality of the soil, because some nutrients are tampered with during burning the grass.
Besides destroying soil nutrients, burning grass on to the garden affects the seeds whether germinating or still in the soil, he adds.
Benimana advises local leaders to sensitize residents on agriculture, because they listen to the advice of their leaders more than agronomists.
