Gashora Igeragezwa 300x188 Rwanda | Bugesera: watermelon thrive in Gashora sectorAfter the resolutions to try cultivating Watermelon fruit that is not grown anywhere in Rwanda, the agriculture officers in Bugesera district say that this trial is becoming very successful.

Jean de Dieu Nkikabahizi the agriculture officer in Bugesera district says that they distributed watermelon fruit in different sectors in the district and it is growing well in Gashora sector and it failed in Nyamata sector.

After being sure that watermelon thrives in Gashora sector more than other sector, we are going to encourage its farming in this sector” Nkikabahizi explained.

Watermelon is a fruit that looks like pumpkin and it grows just like the pumpkin moving around and it produces many fruits. This fruit is eaten raw and it has the most delicious and yummy juice which is rich in vitamins, it has sugar that is very good to the body.

Paulina Mukanganizi is one of the farmers who grow watermelon says that this fruit has made her achieve moist of her dreams and she can never stop growing it. She has a stable market of it in Kigali city including many people who used to import it from other countries.

Gashora Igeragezwa 2 300x190 Rwanda | Bugesera: watermelon thrive in Gashora sector “After seeing news on TV about the agricultural products exposition that was to be held in Gasabo district in Kigali city, and when I saw the produce from Bugesera district, I decided to try cultivating watermelon and I am now grateful I did.” Mukanganizi proudly said.

Mukanganizi says she took advice from agronomists and she was advised on how to grow watermelon and tasted her soil now she gets more than the expected harvest. She shifted from Gasabo district where she used to live and went to Bugesera district to get near to her farms.

Watermelon has been one of the most imported produce from different countries as it was never grown before in Rwanda.
