Rwanda | Nyabihu: Shyira residents to adapt new farming methods
Shyira and Rugera sectors of Nyabihu district as well as Mugunga sector of Gakenke district are some of the district known for being very productive in banana plantation. Shyira sector is also very productive in other crops especially coffee but people still grow them randomly.
Due to chaos in mixed farming, Angela Mukaminani the vice mayor for finance and economic development in Nyabihu district encouraged residents of Shyira district to put much emphasis on banana plantation which is more productive in this area.
The vice mayor advised residents of this sector to participate in modern farming which is much more productive. She reminded them to pay much attention to agriculture which is the backbone of our economy particularly of Nyabihu district.
The mayor advised them to use fertilizers and manure, to plant selected seeds, to take care of their land and avoid soil erosion, to protect the banks of Mukungwa River which destroys their farms when full, and farm quality coffee and achieve more than Cup of Excellence award.
Alloys Maguru the agronomist of Shyira sector said that they are working on renovating the banana plantation and to cultivate seeds from Rwanda Agriculture Board (RAB), they will also emphasize the production of quality coffee.
Alloys Maguru went on to explain that they have set resolutions to change mixed farming especially in banana plantations where they have already dug about 8.000holes to cultivate in selected seeds of banana seeds from RAB.
On the 23 types of coffee that were rewarded in the Cup of Excellence competition all over the country, Vunga coffee was the only one rewarded in Shyira sector. He asked residents to take care of their coffee by following the advice given to produce quality coffee.
