Rwanda : PM urges tractor assemblers to increase production
Prime Minister Dr Pierre Damien Habumuremyi on Tuesday visited WayInvest – Rwanda, a tractor assembly factory based in Giporoso, Gasabo District and urged owners to increase production in order to enable Rwandan farmers to get tractors at an affordable price.
The Prime Minister was accompanied by the Minister of agriculture and minister in charge of cabinet affairs. He received explanations about the types of tractors assembled in the plant.
They explained that the factory imports spare parts from Czech Republic and use them to make Mouldboard Ploughing machines, harrowing tractors, planters, seeders and harvesters.
Managers of the factory told the Premier that they also organize training tours across the country in collaboration with the ministry of Agriculture.
Habumuremyi asked owners of the factory to increase production in order to enable Rwandan farmers to get tractors at an affordable price.
He asked them to introduce some modern methods including sales, hiring, hire purchase, leasing and others that bring about increased use of tractors in Rwanda.
During the tour, the Minister of Agriculture Dr. Agnes Kalibata said that the initiative is in line with the country’s efforts to promote mechanized agriculture.
Minister Kalibata also said that the ministry of agriculture is soon completing a tractor assembly plant. The plant will be producing hand operated tractors that can be easily used in hilly areas.
