Rwanda | Rusizi: Beware of “antestia bug”, a new enemy of coffee quality
Mr. Innocent Musabyimana, the Deputy Director General at National Agriculture Export Board (NAEB) told residents to beware of antesia bug that affects coffee quality.
He revealed this while presenting to the Coffee Task Force in Rusizi district, the resolutions from the 2011-2012 coffee campaign.
He however said that, Rusizi was the second district in the country with high coffee production but its quality was devalued by antestia bug and other coffee pests, as according to the research.
Though coffee task force commended strategies laid to increase coffee productivity, they say measures to increase its quality should as well be devised.
The Deputy Director of Coffee Task Force in Rusizi district, Mr. Jean Bosco Ngabonziza highlighted that sensitization to use the new pesticide to control pests that affect coffee, is going on.
Also, residents will be advised to use fertilizers in order to improve the productivity of coffee in this area, he adds.
Ngabonziza explained that through community work, the new insecticide that is much effective than the usual one, is being sprayed to coffee plants to avert the problem.
While the spraying campaign kicked off on October 14th 2012, Innocent Musabyimana asks local leaders, coffee mobilizers and development officials to encourage residents into embracing the program.
Currently, Karongi district comes first in having quality coffee while Rusizi district is second in producing quantity coffee.
