Coffee will be grown on 140 hectares of land in Nyanza sector that have been lying undeveloped.

Some of the workers that own lands in question say they embraced this program because they are assured of economic and social development depending on the high yields of coffee.

Another thing they are happy about is that they had failed to cultivate all the land but now they have been given help to cultivate and get paid for it.

Vedaste Rukabu, one of the residents asserts: “I had totally failed to till my land but now I have been facilitated to dig it as I get paid for this service. I’m hopeful the high yields will see me through to social development.”

Jean Bosco Uwimana, executive secretary of Nyanza sector says that coffee was chosen because Nyanza soils favors coffee growing.

Uwimana explains that raw coffee costs Rwf250 a kilo meaning that  if one has five hectares of coffee and harvesting 5 tons, that farmer would get over Rwf1 million.

Posiyani Ryumugabe, in charge of coffee production confirms that residents were given chance to participate in decision making, and that’s why they embraced land consolidation very quickly.

Up to 1200 workers are employed in Umurenge vision program and are paid Rwf1000 every day.

Coffee growing is planned to take four months.
