Modern crop storage is under construction in Mayange sector in Bugesera District in program to give more value to crop production.
Farmers in this district have had a consistent problem of lack of enough storage where in rain season after the harvest of maize production, a lot of produce would rot in the garden or farmers would be forced to harvest them earlier which destroys the goodness of the harvest.
“We had many issues that prompted us to construct a modern storage facility that will be used to dry maize and rice produce making it valuable. The storage will also make it easier to find market for the produce in quantities” said the agronomist of Bugesera district Jean de Dieu Nkinzingabo.
Apart from this storied storage facility being constructed in Mayange sector, other storage facilities of minimum value are being constructed in other sectors of the district with the support of partners in development of the district.
“PASAB and PAPSTA partners in development do help us in building these storages but we do encourage farmers who are capable to build their own storages to help them have good harvest” says Jean de Dieu Nkinzingabo.
The storage under construction
Nkinzingabo went on to explain that some cooperatives that have storage facilities bring together their production for good storage increasing their prices.
A storage facility that was built in Kibaza swamp that connects Ngeruka and Ruhuha sector for Inkingi cooperative which produces rice by PAPSTA was cited an example by Nkinzingabo.
Such storage facilities are of much importance to farmers both for rice and maize; they dry their harvest and have good storage places. Some farmers are already building their own storages for better production.
