Gakenke: Farmer’s Field School, a solution to Irish potatoes seeds

Farmer’s Field School (IAMU) is eyed as a sure way of increasing on the production of Irish potatoes, Denys Hagenimana; in charge of agriculture in Gakenke district has denoted.

This comes after Rwanda Agriculture Board (RAB) promised farmers to increase potato seeds and train them.

The agriculture official confirms that Irish potatoes seeds are not enough in Gakenke district which forces farmers to cultivate fewer hectares of Irish potatoes.

However, some parts of Gakenke district such as Kivuruga, Nemba, Kamubuga and Karambo sectors that border with Burera and Musanze districts are favorable for Irish potato growing, he adds.

Hagenimana asserts: “The reason I am optimistic about IAMU is because it has helped farmers in the sectors it operates in to change their mindsets and switch to commercial agriculture.”

He gives an example of Mataba sector where residents started plum growing after seeing how plum growing rewarded Farmer’s Field School cooperative.
