Gakenke: Nemba sector farmers get manure for increased crop yields
Farmers in Nemba sector in Gakenke district are yet to get manure and add iron to the soil as a way of increasing the yields.
This comes after terraces were made for the farmers to increase the productivity of the selected crops.
Iron helps the soil to absorb water so quickly and become fertile as explains Nemba sector agronomist.
He adds that though Nemba sector had decided to make terraces on 40 hectares of land in the beginning, it has terraced 46 hectares so far in this year 2013.
Like Nemba sector, other sectors have started making terraces with the high hopes that crop yields will increase.
Terraces started in Mataba, Muzo, Minazi and Busengo sectors in Umurenge vision program but the crop production especially beans and maize has greatly improved.
Mbarushimana, a farmer in Nemba sector confirms that terraces will be of great importance in increasing the yields and more grass for the livestock.
