Rulindo: Farmers celebrate the advantages of land consolidation
Farmers in Rulindo district have commended land consolidation program saying it has greatly improved on the crop production compared to before when they practiced traditional agriculture.
Farmers say that land consolidation program have come with benefits like easy access to growing seeds and manure, though accessing markets for the produce is a big challenge to them.
Some members of COPROCYU cooperative in Cyungo sector Rulindo district confirm that the production is sufficient for home consumption and markets due to land consolidation.
In addition, unlike before farmers confess that forming cooperatives made them aware of the importance of modern agriculture.
Head of the cooperative, Sildio Murengerantwari, asserts that they have achieved great development ever since they embraced land consolidation program.
“All cooperative members have understood the benefits of land consolidation and working in cooperatives. We get high yields but sell them cheaply due to lack of markets,” he explains.
However, Murengerantwari assures the members that measures are being taken to solve the market problem saying that MINALOC promised to secure them a market in Rwandan factories that need wheat flour.
COPROCYU cooperative has 230 members who farm on 120 hectares of land where they harvest 400 tons of Irish potatoes and 600 tons of wheat in one season.
Cooperative members ask Rulindo district administration to help them get markets for their produce instead of selling it cheaply.Hortense Munyantore
