Kayonza: Mushroom growing could be a crucial nutrition alternative
Mushrooms are very nutritious and they can be helpful to the people in the fight against poor eating habits and malnutrition among children, Kayonza Agro Progressive Activities (KAPAC) an association that deals in Mushroom growing has confirmed
Members of KAPAC were show casing their products and the process of mushroom farming during the exposition program in Kayonza district. They explained that mushroom farming is easy and can be done by anyone and are more productive.
KAPAC association members collect manure and soil and small anthills of which they plant mushrooms and even sell some to whoever needs them as they are more productive. An anthill costs Rwf500 and can be harvested to 5 times without renovating it.
Mushrooms can even be grown by people with no big space like in basins, buckets or sacks or anything that can hold soil.
Residents of Kayonza district are slowly getting used to mushroom growing which is easy and do not need constant supervision as Therese Nyirarukundo a resident of Mukarange sector explained.
“Mushroom growing is very good and uncomplicated and it does not take much of your time nor your space. A person can add it next to the vegetable garden Karima K’igikoni” says Therese Nyirarukundo
