After realizing the importance of coffee plantations to the development of farmers in the sectors of Nyabihu district, the hectares for coffee growing in the sectors are going to be increased.
This was said by Angela Mukaminani the vice mayor for finance and economic development in Nyabihu district. “Coffee has been influential in the development of its farmers and we have to boost its farming” says the mayor.
This is much so with the coffee grown by Vunga coffee Cooperative in Shyira sector winning the reward of the best quality coffee in the cup of excellence competitions. In sectors like Jomba, Shyira and Rurembo where coffee is grown in large quantities, people are being encouraged to grow more coffee with the land that is more conducive for coffee growing.
Joseph Ngezahoguhora a resident of Jomba sector says “for growing coffee, I managed to build a house and buy a cow for my family, buy a radio and I can provide for my family among the many things.”
Nyabihu district plans on increasing the hectares where coffee is grown. Up to now 254 hectares is grown with coffee after 30 hectares were added on last year. This year 85 hectares will also be added on the land preserved just for coffee growing.
