Pyrethrum is now boosting Rwanda’s export income by $5 billion annually. Pyrethrum exporters aim for $45 billion in the next 5 years. Rwanda harvests between 600-800 tons of pyrethrum annualy.
Pyrethrum is grown in Rubavu, Nyabihu, Musanze and Burera districts of Rwanda.
Due to geographical setup of the districts it is grown in, Rwanda pyrethrum products have attracted big market
The plant is credited for transforming the economic status of farmers. Pyrethrum is used to make pesticides and fragrance. However, pyrethrum products still lack an international market, according to Gabriel Bizimungu, The director of SOPYRWA, a processing company.
SOPYRWA motivates farmers to grow more pyrethrum through awarding the outstanding farmers with livestock.
