Farmers in Gakenke sector in Gakenke district have set goals to increase the Maize crop production from 4.5 tons to 7 tons of maize. This was said during the official opening of the cultivation season 2014A in this sector.
Farmers to increase maize production
These goals were made by farmers who are members of ‘Twihangire umurimo-Gakenke’ cooperative. They intend to increase the crop production by using factory made fertilizers and growing selected seeds.
According to Jean de Dieu Niyibizi the chairperson of ‘Twihangire umurimo-Gakenke’ cooperative, “this is possible since we came from producing 600kilograms of maize on one hectare to producing 4.5 tons on the same area.”
Innocent Musabyimana the deputy director of Rwanda Agriculture Board (RAB) who had attended this function asked farmers to work as a team and to use fertilizers if they have to achieve their goals.
Gakenke district comes first in the Rwandan district that uses fertilizers and it had a lot of crop production in the last season of cultivation.
